Kirsty Black

The distinctive work of New Zealand artist and designer Kirsty Black is the result of a life spent growing up around the world. A visual thinker it was natural for Kirsty from a young age to express herself through her love of colour, pattern and repetition which developed into a fascination with abstraction.

Primarily working in acrylic and mixed media her style blurs the boundaries between art and design, translating everyday objects and scenes into abstract snapshots of, often vivid, colours, movement and texture. Her art is a reaction to a variety of stimuli, a pared down memory, stripping away the detail to reveal the essence of the thought, sensation, sound or scene resulting in bold, seemingly spontaneous pieces of art that are imbued with her distinctive sense of colour, evoking the moods, shapes and ambience of her peripatetic life.

Kirsty also “... likes abstract art for its ability to lead viewers down their own path drawing on their unique experiences and their imagination."

As a trained designer Kirsty has been exhibiting and selling her art since 2006 and has participated in a number of group exhibitions around New Zealand as well as yearly soloexhibitions at Gallery O, The Arts Centre, Christchurch. She has also sold her art to international buyers in Australia, America, France, England and Korea, including a number of commissions.
